A NEW CHAPTER

Worthy House occupies a prominent position within the historic village square of Bradworthy and has been part of the village's story for well over a century.

The property was originally established in the 1870s by Mr Reuben Martin, whose family business became a well-known fixture of village life. His son, John Martin, later took over the business and commissioned the construction of the present building in 1908. Alongside running the shop, the Martin family were also skilled shoemakers, serving both the local community and the surrounding rural areas.

Over the years, the business passed through generations of the family. Following John's death, his daughter Grace Martin took over and continued the successful enterprise. The shop became renowned for supplying a wide range of goods, including hardware, furniture, carpets, footwear and household essentials, making it an important part of daily life in Bradworthy.

As the business evolved, Mr Tom Cann joined as a partner, and later, following Grace's marriage to Mr H. Wickett, ownership passed to the Wickett family. The business continued to thrive under Mr Wickett's stewardship for many years before being taken over by his son, John Wickett, with John Wellington later becoming a partner.

Today, while the building has entered a new chapter as Worthy House, much of its character and heritage remain. Guests staying here are not only enjoying a spacious holiday home in the heart of North Devon, but also becoming part of the continuing story of one of Bradworthy's most recognisable historic buildings.
